Friendswood High School Students Win Third Annual West Point Bridge Design
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Friendswood High School seniors Andrew Bradford and Sheng Xu were crowned
                                                    ^^^^^^^^
 the top Virtual Bridge Designers for 2004 at the ASCE sponsored third annual
 West Point Bridge Design Contest on May 14. The students, from Friendswood
, Texas, were each awarded a $15,000 scholarship and a laptop computer.


Students from five high schools across the country competed in teams of two
 to create a new design using a specified Bridge Designer scenario. The four
 other teams represented schools from Nampa, Idaho; Newtown, Conn.; Irvine
, Calif.; and Anamosa, Iowa.


During the qualifying round, over 15,000 teams produced more than 50,000
unique designs. Eighty teams went on to compete in the semi-final round.


Although the 2004 contest is over, the West Point Bridge Designer software
 is still available for free download, and the web-based judging system is
 fully operational. Students can continue to submit designs, receive feedback
 compare their work to more than 20,000 other bridge designers around the
 world and practice for next year's competition.
