I know, I know, I know! You want to go to America or some other countries
next year. You want to see the world, you want to test your survival abil
ity, and you want to go now!
But do you want to quickly get a college admission letter so you can be o
ne of those people lining up in front of the US Embassy with no idea as to
whether you can get a visa? Then, after a US visa officer refuses your vi
sa, do you want to have to try
again a year later, but with even less confidence? It's painful. Don't ev
en try!
Do you want to be one of those who know nothing about the American educat
ional system except GREs and GMATs? Then, when your TOEFL scores turn out
to be lower than others, do you want to suddenly lose confidence in yourse
lf to the point where you feel
like giving up?
No, you want neither of the above! When you go to the US Embassy, you wan
t to know that you are not simply trying your luck. You want to be the one
who knows that you will have a 70% chance to get a visa. When others have
lost their confidence in going
abroad, you could be the one who can offer good advice, because you know
so much about the outside world. You know how to improve your qualificatio
ns, your chances, and even yourself in general as a human being.
So...how can you become somebody so confident and knowledgeable? I think
that if you just start out to prepare for going to America and if your Eng
lish is not exceptionally good, you may need 2 to 3 years to be able to su
ccessfully go to America. You
should do the following in the 2 to 3 year period.
BeBeyond's Going Abroad Plan:
Phase I (1-2 years depending on your English level)
1. Learn English:
Not just prepare for tests. Learn real English, learn communication skill
s in English, and learn how to write and talk appropriately and convincing
ly.
2. Know about the country to which you are going:
Study its culture, its people, and its educational system. It's better th
at you learn them directly from English sources. Don't worry about what yo
u don't understand at first. Simply keep trying.
3. Study application processes and requirements:
Familiarize yourself with the application processes and requirements as e
arly as possible, so you can start to improve your competitiveness early o
n, while you still have time.
4. Network:
Make friends with others who have the same intentions as you do. Make fri
ends who are already in the country to which you are going. Start building
relationships with people who can write you a recommendation letter.
Phase II (1 year)
1. Apply to schools:
Use the correct strategies to apply to schools. It takes a lot of time to
finish one quality application, so be prepared!
2. Learn more about the country to which you are going:
Knowing the situation in your targeted country is now even more important
, so you can continuously adjust your application strategies.
3. Network more:
Now, it's even more important to know the people who might be able to hel
p you. Make friends and take to more people.
Phase III
Go, but don't get lost in an international airport! :)
What If You Fail?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------
No matter how hard you try and no matter how good your plan is, there is
always a chance that you may fail. This is true with almost anything in li
fe.
But following this plan, even if you fail, you will have mastered real En
glish skills (as opposed to some useless GRE scores) which you can use and
enjoy in your life! And you will also have gained tremendous knowledge of
the outside world! Together
with your English skills, this will help you get a better job in China --
especially those high-paying jobs -- and will help you deal more effectiv
ely with foreigners.
In any case, you will become a more sophisticated, knowledgeable person!
I realize you want to go now... but be patient!
