Anti Zerg Marines
by Maynard
EDITOR'S NOTE: This strategy really shone in the limelight during the
late rounds of PGL when Maynard faced off with ZoL~Cherry for the
right to go to the finals. Maynard played Cherry (Zerg) on Styx,
locked him in and ended up making an astounding ELEVEN Barracks to
knock off Cherry! -CB
The fundamentals of the Terran "Anti-Zerg Marine" rush is to match
pound for pound Marines to Hydralisk. Once you research Stimpacks
and Range the Marine gives more bite the the buck than the Hydralisk.
Whereas most Hydralisk rushers are weak early to a Bunkering and/or
Marine "cheeze rush", Terran Marine rusher has a consistent flow of
Marines from start to finish. The Marine rush works well on maps such
as Bridge Over The River Styx, The Lost Temple, and especially The
Hunters.
The Marine rush starts with you making 8 SCVs and then a Supply Depot.
You don't really need to scout this early vs. a Zerg because the
Spawning Pool on 6th Drone rush is easily stopped with 1 Marine in
the Mineral area and SCVs protecting it. Keep a constant flow of SCVs
early on bigger maps such as Temple and Hunters. Make your Barracks on
SCV number 11 and number 13 and another once you have the Minerals and
another Supply Depot. Keep up a consistent flow of Marines and SCVs.
Around this time you should send an SCV scout to see if the Zerg is
powering his main town with 2 Hatcheries, expanding fast with no
Zergling, or if he's going Zerglings to have sufficient defence for
your Marines. Now this is when you change your strategy to adjust to
the Zergs'. If you see the dual Hatchery in main, the Hydralisk rush,
or the fast expand Hydralisk rush with no Zerglings, then bring up 8
Marines and 2 SCVs to below his base and begin to build Bunkers out
of site range. Around this time he will have littlle to no Hydralisk
depending on map size.
If he does not catch this you are in a good position. If he does and
he has sufficient troops to defend, retreat your troops back to your
base. Continue making constant Marines(rally them under your Bunkers
at his base) and SCVs and bring around 3-4 more SCVs to his base.
Make a Factory under your Marines and Bunkers. At the same time you
should be getting an Academy, an expansion, and have about 3-4 Bunkers
to prevent his escape. Your Siege Tanks will do the destruction work.
Siege up the area and slowly advance to his base while building your
base up. You should have yourself a dead Zerg. The power of this lies
in the fact that your defense is your offense and the Zergs' lack of
early answer versus Siege Tanks/Bunkers. Remember the strength of the
Bunker is not the actual Bunker, its the SCVs repairing it.
Now if the Zerg thwarts your Bunker attempt or goes hard Zerglings
with a Sunken Colony back up, you should play more passive. Pump out
continious Marines and when you get 24 Marines advance to his base.
Send out one Marine scout to see his situation. If he has around
30 Zerglings and 4 hydra or so, Attack! You have got the Zerg in the
akward transition from Zergling to Hydralisk. This should kill or
cripple him.
If he has enough troops to defend, ie 13 Hydralisk, run back to home.
As you attacked you should have started up gas and made Academy.
Begin upgrades and make 1 defensive Bunker and expand. This is your
weakest point. You do not have Stimpacks or Marine Range upgrade.
Your previous rushes should have crippled his economy so you are
both building up. Just play passive, make more Barracks and dont
attack unless you see him expand. Once your 1/0 upgrade is around
5/6th of the way done you should have about 50-60 Marines depending
on map. At this point you should have roughly 6 Barracks. If you play
your cards right, you will now decide where and when battles are
fought. On a smaller map such as Styx, you should get a few Factories
to make sure he doesnt clog the choke with Hydralisk. On a larger map
such as Temple, expand some more and get a Factory for defensive
Siege Tanks on the hill. Continue upgrades and you should eventually
win.
