Steel



The annual production of steel is around 700 to 800 million tons per year.
This level of production is decreasing because the high-alloy steels used in
many applications where a good wear resistance is necessary have been
replaced by ceramic-coated materials. Nevertheless, steel will still be
used for many large-scale structures such as ships, pipelines, and
buildings. Steel is also used for automobiles.



Corrosion is a main problem with metals such as steel. One solution has
been the development of a range of " stainless " steels, each designed for a
specific application: fully austenitic steels for kitchen ware and chemical
plants, ferritic stainless steels for automobiles, martensitic stainless steels
for hard-wearing machine parts, etc. A new carburizing stainless steel
alloy that resists corrosion, heat, and fatigue has been developed for
bearing and gear applications. However, these steels are rather expensive.
The main alloying elements are the fairly scarce metals chromium and
nickel, which make up about 25% of the steel.
