Polyamide (nylon)

The high molecular weight polyamide known generally as nylon is formed
from adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine.
Nylon has high strength, good elasticity and abrasion resistance, and good
solvent resistance. Nylon has a wide range of uses. Nylon fibers are used
for tire cord, rope, hosiery, apparel, and home furnishings. The high
strength of nylon allows manufacture of lightweight and very sheer
fabrics. High strength nylon also has a variety of automotive and
industrial uses.

Kevlar is an aromatic nylon prepared from terephthalic acid. Aromatic
polyamids (aramids) are high melting, high in thermal stability, and
generally have high performance properties. Kevlar by Dupont melts at
over 500 degrees Celsius, and is exceptionally high in strength. It finds use
in heavy duty conveyor belts, and in composite structure with casting
resins such as epoxies. It competes with steel in radial tire reinforcement.
