In this paper, the processing of Sandwich structured laminated Si3N4/BN cer
amic composite is studied and optimized. The dependence of mechanical proper
ties (especially interfacial toughness) of obtained composites on structure
characteristics is investigated in detail, the strengthening and toughening
mechanisms are also discussed.
With the method of tape casting, well-performance interface layer of laminat
ed Si3N4/BN ceramic composite, with uniform thickness, is obtained. The prep
aration process is studied and the main related parameters are optimized.
With Sandwich structured laminated Si3N4/BN ceramic composite, fracture beha
viors of interface layers with different compound are studied. Modification
of the structure and the properties within the interfacial layers are discus
sed. The interfacial bonding strength can be enhanced by introducing Al2O3 o
r Si3N4 into the BN layers, and the mechanical properties of the laminated c
omposites can be improved accordingly. However, the interface layer still ke
eps weak. When more Al2O3 or Si3N4 is introduced, the interfacial bonding st
rength can increase continuously thus the frature manner of the composites e
ventually changes from "graceful" (non-catastrophic) fracture to brittle fra
cture. By studying the fracture behavior, the dependence of interfacial toug
hness on structure characteristics can thus be found.
Chemical reactions in interface layer are also analyzed. The fine multi-laye
red microstructure in the interfacial layers was observed. The experiments s
howed that the formation of fine microstructure was due to liquid transfer a
nd crystallization from liquid phase during sintering. The fine microstructu
re improves interfacial bonding strength and interfacial toughness.
