3. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS
3.1 Element-Level sensitivity
In reliability-based optimization, the reliability indices of elements
aree generally included in the constraints or in the objective function. Fo
r such a nun-linear optimization problem, the derivatives of reliability ind
ices of elements with
respect to the design variables, __/__ , are required.In the case where the
desiign variables are considered as basic random variables used for reliabil
ity analysis, the derivative can be computed as:
d_/dX=d_/d_ xd_/dX=--y*/__ (18)
where
__=__
y*=____
__=the standard deviation of x
__=mean value of x
In Equation (18), __ and y* are already known from the element raliability
callculation and __ is known from statistical description of the random var
iable x.
3.2 System-Level Sensitivity
When the reliability-based optimization problem is formulated with a re
quir
ment for the system reliability index of series system, the reliability inde
x __
can be estimated as explained in Section 2.3 by the use of Equation (15). _
_/__
can be
obtained by differentiation of __ in Equation (15) with respect to x, as fo
llow
.
__/__=1/__ { }
9)
If the individual ply group failure modes are assumed to comply with th
e we
kest link criterion, then the above expression becomes
__/__=__/__
(
0)
where __/__ is calculated from Equation (18).
