Excavators peer into the Philistine period at grid 38. About an acre in size (
0.4 hectares), it is the largest of the four sections now being worked at Ashk
elon. Philistines dominated the city from 1175 B.C. to 604 B.C. Enemies of the
Israelites, Philistines were depicted in the Bible as brutish, but this excav
ation is revealing a sophisticated culture.
