NASA and its counterparts in Europe and Japan want to go beyond
photographing other worlds, or even landing on them to sweep up dust
for analysis. Scientists are now eager to drill deep into moons,
asteroids, comets, and other planets in hopes of finding signs of
life and clues to our solar system's evolution. Robots designed for
such missions may wield unusual drill bits: lasers and ultrasonic
vibrations.
