Civil engineering has been defined as "the art of directing the great sourc
es of power in nature for the use and convenience of mankind". The preparati
on for a career in civil engineering provided by a university degree demands
 logical and analytical thinking. It often goes into minute detail to find o
ut the "whys" and "hows" of a problem. It equips students with the skill and
 the will to take on the challenges of the technology explosion happening in
 today's world.
Putting it simply, Civil Engineers are prepared to deal with problems that a
re "big" and "small". Throughout China and Asia engineers are held in extrem
ely high regard and many hold high political office; they are considered to 
be the "builders of the nation". This applies, although perhaps to a lesser 
extent, in several other non-English speaking countries such as France and G
ermany.
In entering Civil Engineering, one has a wide range of possible activities f
rom which to choose. For example, one could become a specialist (to deal onl
y with problems that are structural, environmental or transportation, for ex
ample) or a generalist, a consultant (to do the planning and design) or a co
ntractor (to participate in the construction) or even a real estate develope
r. It can suit a variety of individuals, either male or female, ranging from
 those who wish to dedicate themselves to improvement in the society, to tho
se who wish to build something massive of which they can be proud. Many Civi
l Engineers are ultimately promoted to executive positions, where they may b
ecome responsible more for administration and management than for detailed t
echnical decision making.
