TOKYO
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is also the center of national administration,
education, culture, communication and economy. Tokyo has a population of 1
2.3 millions and has 23 urban wards. It is often said Tokyo is a combination
of several "cities within the cities".
Ieyasu Tokugawa established his shogunate government at Edo, the present To
kyo, in 1603 and the Edo Period lasted for some 260 years. By 1787, the
population had risen to 1.37 million making Edo one of the most populous
cities in the world.
In 1868, the Meiji Imperial government was restored as a new constitutional
government, and the capital moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.
Orientation:
For visitors, trains and subways are very efficient and convenient means of
exploring Tokyo.
Nearly everything of interest lies either on or within the JR Yamanote Line
(silver trains with green stripes), the rail loop that circles the central
of Tokyo in one hour.
There are 12 subway lines, crisscrossing the city, each marked with a diff
erent color on the subway map.
We suggest you plan to ride a Tokyo train or subway at least once,
even if there's no specific destination in mind, it is a good way to "feel"
Tokyo.
