Detective Evans arrived at Jon Smith's house at 4:44 p.m. and started
interviewing the three boys who were at Jon's house at the time of the crime.
Everybody started to talk at once, trying to tell his side of the story.
When Detective Evans finally got everyone quieted down, he started asking
Jon some questions.
"What time did you find your baseball was missing?" Detective Evans asked.
Jon replied,"Probably about 4:15 p.m., but think it was Josh who did it.
Take him downtown!"
Trying to defend himself, Josh said,"I'll tell you the real story. It was
3:30 when we arrived at Jon's house. We were talking about baseball cards
when Jon told Spencer and me to put our bags in his bedroom. Spencer and I
wanted some snacks and sodas.
Spencer and Jon went to the kitchen to get them."
"Okay, but tell me what happened," asked Detective Evans.
"Okay, okay, I 'm going to continue my story, the real story. While they
went to the kitchen, I grabbed my baseball cards, then went into the living
room. We started to drink sodas and trade baseball cards."
Detective Evans asked,"Spencer, where were you when all this was happening?"
"Well, when they were trading cards, I went to the bathroom. While I was
washing my hands, I noticed the bathroom had two doors. But I didn't worry
about it much."
"How long where you in there?" asked Detective Evans.
"Why do you need to know?" asked Spencer.
"I just need to know where everybody was at the time the baseball was stolen,"
Detective Evans replied.
"Well, I can tell you right now it wasn't me," stated Spencer.
Detective Evans knew that no one else could have done it. It had to be one
of the three boys.
