The Autobiography of Shining

My Childhood（1）

I was born in the year of 1976, the end of the famous Institutional Revoluti
on. And also in that year three famous Chinese leaders died, including Chair
man Mao, Premier Zhou and Marshal Zhu. In order to celebrate the collapse of
 the notorious Foursome Group, my uncle gave me the name of “yue4”, which 
in Chinese means happiness.

But in the poor time, no one would be happy by the force of living. My paren
t had to work hard all day and all night in the field. At the end of the yea
r they earned little because they should pay for the debt first. We would no
t have any meat or wear any new clothes until the Spring Festival came. Now 
I am always thanking my parents and my elder sister for the love they give me
 though I am used to be a naughty boy.

There are many funny stories of mine. When I was too young to be left alone 
home, Mother always took me to the fields with her. Once she suddenly found 
me lost and was so nervous that she cried out. Finally she found that I was 
weltering in the pond. I jumped into the pond just because a frog jumped fir
st and I wondered since it could jump so far then why I could not. Thus I di
d. Then Mother found a big branch and catched me out. Many years later Mothe
r told me that I would have been dead if she did not found me on time.

The house we lived in was reformed from a Kwan-yin temple, dark and wet all 
the year. There were about 6 families living there. Unfortunately my neighbo
urs all had daughters except my parents. I am the only boy in my generation. 
So I become the hope of the family, even of the Kwan-yin temple.
