The long wait for a Scudetto came to an end in 1951. After 44 years, Milan 
were Serie A champions under coach Lajos Czeizler. But more than the
 Hungarian, this was Gunnar Gren, Nils Liedholm and Gunnar Nordahl's triumph. 
It was the holy trinity of Gre-No-Li who realised president Umberto 
Trabattoni's dream.
Milan could now compete with any team in the land. And while the personnel 
changed, the success remained the same. Centre-forward Juan Alberto S
chiaffino arrived from Penarol to replace Gren and inspire the championship 
win of 1955.
By this time Andrea Rizzoli had taken over as president, with trainer Gipo 
Viani following him into the club. The Rossoneri were champions again
 in 1957 and 1959 - when there was no stopping Brazilian striker Jose 
Altafini.
It wasn't all star names at the San Siro, however. Cesare Maldini was one 
of a group of fine young players that included Pelagalli, Salvadore, D
anova and Radice.
Excellent onfield results were mirrored by a forward-looking approach off 
it: Rizzoli, a newspaper mogul, oversaw the construction of a training
 base at Milanello where he installed a fitness coach, medical team, psy
chologist and tutor.
The Fifties were a good decade for Milan. As well as four League titles,
 they claimed the Coppa Latina twice. Then, in 1957/58, the Rossoneri 
reached a first European Cup Final, losing out to Real Madrid in Brussels,
 3-2.
