Defeat to Real Madrid in 1958 was the harbinger of better days in Europe. 

Yet the story of the Sixties was as much Italian as continental.

When Milan won their eighth Scudetto in 1962, the backbone of the team w

as homegrown: Trapattoni, Pelagalli, Lodetti and Trebbi. Niels Liedholm 

had hung up his boots, and president Andrea Rizzoli had replaced Jose 

Altafini with another influential Brazilian, Dino Sani.

The Sixties' economic boom reflected on the football scene. Gianni River

a arrived from Alessandria in 1961 as understudy to Jimmy Greaves, yet 

soon become the new idol of Italian soccer. In the 'Bambino d'Oro' the 

Rossoneri had a sex symbol to rival George Best and The Beatles.

But it was coach Nereo Rocco who cast the longer shadow over the decade.

 Following his team's success in the 1962 title race, the 'Paron' guided

 Milan to European Cup victories in 1963, against Benfica at Wembley, and 

1969 against Johan Cruyff's Ajax in Madrid.

The honours' list did not end there, however. Milan lifted the Coppa 

Italia in 1967, achieved the double of Italian championship and European 

Cup Winners Cup in 1968, and were crowned World Club Champions after 

defeating Estudiantes of Argentina in 1969.
