Part of the legendary Gre-No-Li team (along with fellow Swedes Gren and Liedholm), Nordhal became very popular in the 1950s when he played for AC Milan. Thanks to his goals, the team won two championships (in 1951 and 1955) and a Latina cup, which was
later superseded by the European Cup.
The name of Gunnar Nordahl is inextricably linked to AC Milan - he scored 210 goals in 257 League matches. Although he had been targeted for quite a while by Juventus, the 'Avvocato'(Italian for lawyer) Agnelli backed down and let him move to AC
Milan. Juventus backed down because they wanted to make it up to AC Milan for recently 'poaching' Dutch player Ploeger. The acquisition was carried out through Fiat's subsidiary in Stockholm.

Nordahl was Nicknamed 'Pompiere' (Italian for fireman, his profession in Sweden before leaving for Italy). He was the league's top goalscorer five times and runner-up twice. He was prolific in front of goal, as his record (43 goals in 33 matches for
Sweden between 1942 and 1948) clearly demonstrates. He guided Sweden to victory during the 1948 Olympic games in London. He is the forward with the highest strike-rate (0.773) in the history of Italian championship.
