Half rabbit (as coach Gipo Viani dubbed him for his agility at evading tackles in the penalty area), half lion (when he was in the mood), one newspaper headline rechristened Jos?Altafini with the name 'Conileone' (A combination of Coniglio, which is
Italian for rabbit and leone which means lion).
He remains to this day one of Italian football's most prolific players, scoring 216 goals in 459 matches played in the Italian league. He arrived in Italy from Palmeiras, the Sao Paolo club where Italians in Brazil traditionally played. The Brazilians
called him 'Mazola' (this is how the newspaper reports of the time referred to him), due to his tremendous likeness to the captain of the great Torino side, the 'Grande Torino'. He was in the first team for the 1958 World Cup, held in Sweden, until
Brazilian coach Feola left him on the bench to make way for Vava. Rumour had it that Feola wanted to punish Altafini, for having already agreed terms with Milan.

He arrived in northern Italy two months later, and helped the Rossoneri win the Scudetto in his first season. He won his second League championship in 1962 and was top goalscorer in the same season.

Altafini accomplished an impressive double the following year. Not only did AC Milan become the first Italian team to win the European Cup when the Rossoneri beat Eusebio's Benfica at Wembley, but Altafini himself also scored the most goals ever in a
single season's European competition. His total was an amazing 14.

Since he was of Italian descent, Altafini played for the Italian national side as well as for the Brazilian one, as other illustrious compatriots had done before him. He played six matches and scored five goals for the Azzurri.

As well as AC Milan, Altafini also played for Napoli and Juventus, where he moved to at the age of 34. It seemed at the time as though his career was over. He had a surprise in store, though - he may have had to make his entrance from the subs' bench,
but he stayed at Juventus for four seasons...and won two Scudetti.
