After being an outstanding talent on the pitch (some say he was the best Italian player of all time), Gianni Rivera went into politics. He made his debut in Italy's Serie A, wearing the grey shirt of his home town Alessandria during their 1-1 draw with
Inter on June 2, 1959 at the age of 15.
Franco Pedroni, former player of AC Milan and coach and player for the Piedmont-based football club, tested Gianni Rivera against AC Milan in May 1959. Rivera played alongside Schiaffino, along with Liedholm, Altafini and Grillo. AC Milan acquired him
immediately, letting him play for another year for Alessandria to gain experience. The following season, Alessandria lost at the San Siro (Milan) thanks to a goal scored by young Gianni.

His incredible story began in the summer of 1960, when Milan paid L60m plus three of its players to sign Rivera from Alessandria. Rocco wanted to loan Rivera to Padova for a season to allow him to develop, but Viani refused to do that. Rivera played
in the red and black of AC Milan for 19 championships and won everything. His haul was 3 Scudetti, 4 Coppa Italia, 2 European cups, 2 European cup winners' cups and 1 Intercontinental cup. His first Scudetto came in his second championship season with
AC Milan, who then went on to win its first European cup the following year. It was the Milan side of Nereo Rocco. Rivera later bade farewell to football after playing in 527 matches (501 of which in AC Milan) and scoring 128 goals. His farewell
coincided with Milan's tenth league title.

In 1969 he became the first Italian player to be awarded the golden ball, the highest individual acclaim a footballer can receive. He made his debut for the Italian national side in 1962 at the tender age of nineteen (Brussels, Belgium 1 Italy 3) and
went on to score 14 goals in 60 appearances. He stopped playing for Italy at the age of 30, after winning the European championship in 1968. His Mexican double-act with Mazzola, and especially his winner in the semi-finals against Germany (4-3) have
become legendary. At the age of 36, after winning the title (Milan's tenth - so they were awarded the 'stella' as recognition of the achievement), he bowed out and began his career as a politician.
