"Liddas taught me positional sense. I had always thought that my job was to prevent my direct opponent from scoring, but with zonal marking I learnt to come forward, construct and participate in the team´s play"
Mauro Tassotti
Mauro Tassotti was an integral part of Arrigo Sacchi´s team of the late 80s and early 90s. Tassotti, a defender, started out with Lazio where his career developed under the influence of Stefano Chiodi and Alberto Bigon. But it was with Milan that
Tassotti came to prominence - he amassed 429 Serie A appearances and won 5 League championships during a remarkable 17-year spell at the San Siro.
His next great success came from the youth team (from 1997 to 2001), which after 39 years without a trophey won two Viareggio cups. In March of 2001 he became the vice manger of the first team under Cesare Maldini.
Tassotti, 40, arrived in Milan in 1980 from hometown club Lazio. Initially identified as a rough-and-ready full-back, he emerged as an imposing defender of rare touch, earning the moniker 'Djalma' after his purported similarity in style to Djalma
Santos, the great Brazil defender of the late 1950s.
While his early years were touched by associations with some of Italy´s foremost coaches, Alberto Bigon and Stefano Chiodi at Lazio, and Massimo Giacomini at Milan, Niels Liedholm is credited with moulding Tassotti into the player he became - and by
no less an authority than Mauro himself. 'Liddas taught me positional sense. I had always thought that my job was to prevent my direct opponent from scoring, but with zonal marking I learnt to come forward, construct and participate in the team´s
play,' he says.
Another influence was Franco Baresi, the Italy defender whose career dovetailed with that of Tassotti. But if Baresi was the shining shield of the Milan back-line, recognition for his friend and team-mate was slower to arrive. When it did - at
international level - Mauro became the oldest ever member of the Azzurri: he was 32 when he made his international debut.
Tassotti´s Serie A baptism was a less trumpeted affair. The first of 41 League appearances for Lazio was in a 0-0 draw at Ascoli on 5 November 1978. But it was in Milan where he found his true metier, his debut against Catania (24 August 1980) and
final adieu (Milan 0-1 Cagliari, 1 June 1997) bracketing 17 years of distinguished service.
In all, he made 581 appearances for Milan, scoring 10 goals. 429 of those appearances were in Serie A, 69 in Europe, 75 in the Coppa Italia and 15 in assorted other competitions. And when the time came to call it a day, the trophy cabinet was anything
but bare; Tassotti´s defensive endeavours were rewarded with 5 Scudetti, 3 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 4 Italian Super Cups and 3 European Super Cups.
