Born: Cisano Bergamasco (BG)
Date of birth: 09/09/1963
Nickname:
"the player who would set the San Siro alight again."
Silvio Berlusconi
Donadoni, Baresi, Maldini and Costacurta are the only AC Milan players to have won six Scudetti. Roberto was transferred from Atalanta to AC Milan for the 1987-1988 season. He also had a short spell in American Major League Soccer playing for
Metrostars of New York.
He made the switch from being a winger with creative flair to a very classy attacking midfielder. For many years he was a bottomless well of flair and creativity for AC Milan and for Italy (playing under Vicini at first and then under Sacchi). His
speed of movement enabled him to elude reckless challenges. When the Rossoneri bought him, president Berlusconi labelled him as 'the player who would set the San Siro alight again.'
In terms of honours, he is one of Italy's most successful players of all time. He won everything with AC Milan, first with Sacchi and then with Capello. His personal silverware is mightily impressive - three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups,
three European Supercups and four Coppa Italia.
He played in two World Cups for Italy. In 1990 when Italy hosted the finals and finished in third place (he missed the penalty which saw Italy lose their semi-final to Argentina) and in USA '94, when Italy lost in the final, again on penalties.
His favourite hobby is golf, which he is good at, as are his former team-mates Massaro and Van Basten. He is an expert in thoroughbred dogs. At a beginning-of-season party on July 21, Mr. Berlusconi bade him farewell in front of AC Milan faithful, who
gave him a well-deserved standing ovation.
