Here, after it was revealed that the medal Bates tried to hang around
Ferguson's neck at Wembley on Sunday was engraved with the words
'To Lord Fergie, The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread'！
Meanwhile, in a side issue, their respective teams were getting ready to
raise the curtain on the new Premiership season in the Charity Shield.
Bates promised Fergie "a surprise" and all was revealed on Sunday when
he attempted to hang that medal around the Scotsman's neck. The
angry Old Trafford boss snatched the gong away from his juvenile rival in
a petty exchange that will no doubt have thoroughly impressed onlookers
in Wembley's Royal Box while, admittedly, thoroughly amusing all those
watching at home.

Bates said: "I was trying to give him the medal as a peace offering. I
wanted to try to calm things down but he wouldn't take it and that says
more about him than me."
